Why you’ll love it
Freezer burritos are one of my favorite meal prep recipes because they check every box: easy, affordable, filling, and incredibly versatile. I love how you can make a big batch in one go and enjoy stress-free meals for days (or even weeks!).
The combination of seasoned ground beef, hearty beans, melty cheese, and zesty salsa wrapped in a soft tortilla is pure comfort food. Every bite is satisfying, flavorful, and perfectly balanced.
What really makes this recipe special is how freezer-friendly it is. These burritos hold up beautifully after freezing, and when reheated properly, they taste just as delicious as freshly made. Plus, you can easily customize the fillings based on what you have on hand.
Whether you’re feeding a family, meal prepping for yourself, or just trying to make life a little easier, these freezer burritos are a must-try.
What you’ll need
Here’s everything I use to make these hearty freezer burritos:
Ground beef – I use lean ground beef (90% lean) to keep things flavorful without too much grease.
Onion – finely chopped for a subtle sweetness and depth of flavor.
Salsa – adds moisture and a bold, tangy kick. Use your favorite brand or homemade.
Taco seasoning – brings all the classic Tex-Mex flavors together.
Pinto beans – hearty, creamy, and packed with protein and fiber.
Water – helps create the perfect saucy consistency.
Cheddar cheese – I prefer reduced-fat, but any cheddar works great.
Flour tortillas – soft, pliable 8-inch tortillas are ideal for wrapping.

Tools for this recipe
You don’t need anything fancy to make freezer burritos, which is another reason I love them!
- A large skillet for cooking the filling
- A wooden spoon or spatula
- Measuring cups and spoons
- Aluminum foil or plastic wrap for storing
- Freezer-safe bags or containers
I usually make everything in one large skillet to keep cleanup minimal.

How to make freezer burritos
This is a quick overview with step-by-step guidance. Full instructions are in the recipe card below.
Step 1: Cook the beef and onion
In a large skillet over medium heat, I cook the ground beef and chopped onion together until the beef is browned and fully cooked. I break it up with a spoon as it cooks.
Step 2: Add flavor
Next, I stir in the salsa, taco seasoning, beans, and water. I let everything simmer for about 5–10 minutes until the mixture thickens slightly and the flavors meld together beautifully.
Step 3: Assemble the burritos
I warm the tortillas to make them easier to fold, then spoon the filling into the center of each tortilla. I sprinkle cheese on top and fold them tightly into burritos.
Step 4: Wrap and freeze
Once assembled, I wrap each burrito in foil or plastic wrap and place them in a freezer-safe bag. Then they go straight into the freezer!
Step 5: Reheat and enjoy
When ready to eat, I simply reheat in the microwave or oven until hot and melty.
Pro tips
- Don’t overfill the burritos or they’ll be hard to wrap and may fall apart.
- Let the filling cool slightly before assembling to prevent soggy tortillas.
- Wrap tightly to avoid freezer burn and keep everything fresh.
- Label your burritos with the date so you know when you made them.
- Use sturdy tortillas that won’t tear easily when folding.
Substitutions and variations
One of the best things about freezer burritos is how customizable they are:
- Swap ground beef for ground chicken or turkey for a lighter option.
- Use black beans instead of pinto beans for a different texture.
- Add rice to make them even more filling.
- Toss in veggies like bell peppers, corn, or spinach for extra nutrition.
- Use pepper jack cheese for a spicy kick.
- Try a low-carb tortilla if you’re watching carbs.
What to serve with freezer burritos
These burritos are a complete meal on their own, but I love pairing them with:
- Fresh guacamole or sliced avocado
- Sour cream or Greek yogurt
- A simple green salad
- Mexican-style rice
- Tortilla chips and salsa
